Here is a list of the most popular Halloween costumes for adults in 2016, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2016 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey. Let’s start the countdown and see if you can guess what the most popular costume is for adults aged 18-34.
#10. Zombie
With the resurrection of the dead just around the corner, zombies are becoming a ubiquitous component of American pop culture. They penetrate movies, TV and now your neighborhood streets this October 31. Some may even come to your front door.

9. Star Wars Characters
The Force has awakened a strong desire to dress like Jedi again. There are old favorites from which to choose, and now there are new suits that will strike fear into toddlers and have grown-ups throwing candy at you. Use your lightsaber to defend yourself.

8. Pirates
It’s an oldie but goodie. A pirate costume probably won’t win you any prizes at Halloween parties for best costume, but you’ll make a respectable showing. The beauty of this classic is it allows you to be as simple or elaborate as you wish. An eye patch and a hat go a long way.

7. Slasher Movie Villains
We can’t get enough of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers. Once again these slasher-film villains are popular and rather appropriate for the theme of the holiday: remembering the dead. These men sent so many to their untimely deaths, it seems only fitting they should wander neighborhoods on Halloween night.

6. Video Game Characters
Keep your eye out for Mario Brothers, Pac Man (and ghosts), Metroid and Megaman, Angry Birds, Sonic, Tetris and Minecraft to name just some of the video games that have entered the realm of Halloween garb. If you don one of these outfits, that’s fine. If you act out the role, you score extra points (or treats).

5. Vampires
Halfway through the list is another old-time favorite fallback: the vampire. You just can’t go wrong with the black cape, high collar and long fangs. Or go for the gold and dress as Count Dracula himself. But beware, what’s in #4 will be ready for you.

4. Superheroes
We need superheroes these days, and on Halloween night, there will be plenty. It doesn’t matter from which empire, either, Marvel Comics or DC Comics. Men and women just want to be heroes. Watch for Deadpool and Spider-Man as well as Wonder Woman and Superman.

3. Animals
When you just can’t come up with a costume idea, you can always fall back on being an animal. Dogs, cats, bunnies, etc., come in as the 3rd most popular costume this year. You don’t have to invest a lot of thought, time or energy, but you’ll still be cool if you put on an animal costume.

2. Witches
Although the witch ensemble might be the most iconic of all the Halloween costumes, it does not take the top spot as the most popular costume this year. With all due respect to the pointed hat, broomstick and cape, step aside for…

The ruler of the night, the Caped Crusader—The Bat Man—takes the crown for the number one costume this year. But he’s no alone. All his nemeses are included in the most popular costumes this year: The Joker, Harley Quinn, The Penguin, etc. Watch for the Bat Signal and have a happy and safe Halloween.
